A Study on Ounyukgiuihakbogam-Chujeungseokui
Lee Jae-Soo

Yun Chang-Yeol
Abstract
Objective : Ounyukgiuihakbogam was written by Cho Won-hee, a scholar who studied the theory of five circuits and six qi during the Japanese colonial era. Cho Won-hee also authored Ounyukgiuihakbogam-Chujeungseokui, a supplementary book to help better understand Ounyukgiuihakbogam. When a doctor of Korean medicine uses prescriptions based on five circuits and six qi, the doctor must know about the content of those books.

Method : This study analyzed and examined the content of Ounyukgiuihakbogam-Chujeungseokui, in the order that the content is presented in the book.

Results : Ounyukgiuihakbogam-Chujeungseokui presented how to easily estimate five circuits and six qi first and then how to calculate the fertilization date. There was much incorrect information related to the methods, and this researcher corrected such information. The ¡°five circuit medicine method¡± used medicine by identifying five circuits through heavenly stems, while the ¡°six qi and sub-season medicine method¡± used medicine by identifying six qi through earthly branches. The theory was presented in Saminbang for the first time and later adopted in Donguibogam and Chochanggyeol. Cho Won-hee also adopted the methods and reflected his clinical experience. ¡°Bosajaemisusihwangiyak¡± is about medicine for reinforcing the five viscera and based on ¡°Jangbujobun¡± in Uihakipmun. The author added one to five medicine materials based on his clinical experience. ¡°Bosajaemisusihwangiyak¡± described different examples of using an ungi prescription based on fertilization dates yet did not provide the sex agenary cycle of the year, thus posing limitations for future scholars trying to use the prescription.

Conclusion : Ounyukgiuihakbogam opened a new horizon of ungi medicine, which treated patients by deciding on the type of their physical constitution based on calculated fertilization dates. Ounyukgiuihakbogam-Chujeungseokui was written as a supplementary book to help with the easy use of Ounyukgiuihakbogam and dealt with what doctors must know when using the ungi prescription. But much incorrect information has been found in the book. The researcher offered explanations to help with the easy use of the ungi prescription and corrected the wrong information.
